Fleet Activity Turned Into ROI

Fuel, Maintenance, and Risk

Geotab uncovers waste so you can lower fuel and maintenance costs, reduce risk, and tighten operations.

  • Preventable idling split out from warm-ups and PTO
  • Under-used vehicles and wasted miles, spotted early
  • Rewards that pay drivers to drive smoother
ROI board for a fleet of 60: 38 fewer idling hours, 412 fewer out-of-route miles, two repairs caught early, 14 overtime hours reconciled, and today's idling ranked by vehicle
+$0.088Per-mile rise in insurance premiums, now roughly 5% of trucking operating costs (ATRI, 2023)
2 to 5xWhat reactive maintenance costs vs preventive (McKinsey); the average breakdown runs about $1,200 (NPTC)
15-30%Mileage cut claimed for fleets that adopt Routing & Optimization (Geotab playbook claims, 2025)
2.7-6.4%Fuel-efficiency gains at Richards Building Supply and King Township on Geotab's driver-rewards program (Geotab, 2026)

Every one of those levers is measured by the same platform you would install for tracking alone.

What Is Idling Costing Your Fleet?

Set the sliders to match your fleet and see what trimming idle time alone could return. Fuel is only the first leak Geotab finds.

60 vehicles
$3.75 / gal

Set it to your local pump price. The rest is prefilled with fleet averages, about 120 gallons per vehicle a month and roughly 20% of fuel burned at idle.

−20% idling
Estimated annual fuel savings $12,960 about $1,080 back every month
  • Your annual fuel spend $324,000
  • Burned while idling $64,800

Where the Money Is

The Waste Is Measurable, so It Is Fixable

In about two weeks your own data names the waste.

Idling and fuel waste

See exactly where fuel burns without moving anyone forward.

Utilization insight

Right-size the fleet and stop paying for vehicles that sit.

Routing efficiency

Fewer miles for the same work, week after week.

Risk and claims

Coach the drivers most likely to cost you a claim before they do; premiums follow.

Five Leaks, One Meter

The Savings Stack, in the Order Most Fleets Find It

01
Idling

The preventable kind, events running 10 to 60 minutes, gets split out from operational idling automatically, so you coach what can actually change.

02
Miles

Route optimization attacks the same work with fewer miles.

03
Breakdowns

Predictive health signals move repairs from the roadside to the bay, where they cost a fraction as much. When one happens anyway, roadside assistance built into Geotab gets help rolling.

04
Risk

Safer driving trims claims, and documented safety data changes insurance conversations at renewal (see Insurance Savings & Risk Reduction).

05
The fleet itself

Utilization data finds the vehicles that sit. The cheapest vehicle to run is the one you stop paying for.

Questions

Cost Reduction FAQ

Where do the savings come from?

Less idling and fuel waste, breakdowns caught before they strand a truck, tighter routing, fewer claims, and less unauthorized use.

Is there proof idling can drop?

Most fleets see idling fall once it is visible and coached, because the preventable share finally has names and numbers attached. Your results depend on your fleet and how the tools are used.

How fast will we see savings?

A free demo puts devices on a few of your vehicles, and the first waste, usually idling and after-hours use, surfaces within about two weeks.

Which savings show up first?

Idling and after-hours use, because they need only visibility and no process change. Routing, maintenance, and insurance gains build over the following quarters as the tools get used.

Are the routing numbers guaranteed?

No, and be suspicious of anyone who guarantees them. The 15-30% mileage figure is a playbook claim (2025), not something we will put in writing for your fleet in advance.

Does cutting costs mean squeezing drivers?

The opposite works better. Geotab's rewards-based Vitality program pays drivers to drive smoother instead of writing them up for driving rough, and fuel efficiency follows.

“We found so much time wasted in every vehicle, and with every driver. It took us literally one week to understand the impact and reality of our return. We are saving 40 to 45% on overtime payroll, over $18,000 per month. It is truly amazing.”
